Reading the Drawing Your Cabinet Maker Sends Back

A kitchen goes wrong at sign-off far more often than it goes wrong at install. This is how to read the sheet you are being asked to approve — and what to check before you say yes.

The drawing arrives as a PDF at twenty past four on a Thursday, with one line in the email: please confirm and we will release it to production. It has your name on it, a plan of your room, three or four straight-on views of walls you half recognise, and about sixty numbers. You look at it for ninety seconds, decide it looks like a kitchen, and reply saying yes. That reply is the most expensive sentence in the project. From that moment the boxes are cut to what is on the sheet, not to what was in your head — and almost every kitchen that arrives wrong arrives exactly as drawn.

01 Three views

Three drawings, three different questions — and the one you cannot sign from

A cabinet drawing set is not one picture of your kitchen. It is two orthographic views — flat, scale, no perspective — plus, increasingly, a rendered image that is not a drawing at all. Each answers a different question, and the commonest mistake a customer makes is answering all three from the first one.

What they search at midnight “how to read kitchen cabinet elevation drawings” — almost always with an approval email already open in the next tab, and a deadline on it.

The plan is a horizontal slice, looking down. Imagine the room cut through about four feet up — above the counter, below the wall cabinets — and the top half lifted off. What you see is the footprint: which cabinet sits next to which, how wide each one is, where the appliances land, how wide the aisle is, which way the room door swings. On most drawings the base cabinets are drawn solid and the wall cabinets are dashed over the top of them, because the wall cabinets are above the cut line. If you only look at one thing on the plan, look at the walkways.

The elevation is one wall, seen dead square on. No perspective, no foreshortening, everything at true scale in the vertical. It is the only place heights exist: counter height, the bottom of the wall cabinets, the top of the run, the gap left to the ceiling, and the way the fronts divide — which faces are doors, which are drawers, where the split falls on the drawer stack. One elevation per wall, usually labelled to match the letters on the plan.

The 3D image is a sales tool, and a good one. It is the fastest way to notice that a whole run is missing or that a colour looks nothing like it did on your screen. It is also the worst thing to approve from: it carries no dimensions, it can be cropped and lit to flatter, and the eye forgives an inch and a half of error in perspective that would jump off an elevation. Enjoy it. Sign the elevations.

Why you cannot approve a kitchen from the plan alone is simply that the expensive mistakes live in the vertical. The plan cannot show you that the 42″ upper now runs into a bulkhead, that the run clears the window casing by a quarter of an inch, that the microwave shelf lands at a height only one person in the house can reach, or that the top of the tall cabinets and the top of the wall cabinets do not line up. All of those are one glance on an elevation and invisible on a plan.

Where the planner helps

You can produce the same two views yourself before anyone quotes you. 02 The codes

Reading the codes without looking anything up

Every cabinet on the drawing carries a code, and the codes look like a private language for about four minutes. The rule underneath them is almost embarrassingly simple: letters say what the cabinet is, the first pair of digits says how wide, the second pair says how tall. Where a family has only one possible height the height digits are left off entirely — every base cabinet is 34½″ tall and 24″ deep, so B18 needs no more than that.

So W3030 is a wall cabinet 30″ wide and 30″ high, 12″ deep because that is what wall cabinets are. PC2490 is a pantry 24″ wide and 90″ high. DB30-3 is a drawer base, 30″ wide, three drawers. A third pair of digits, when you see one, is depth: W301224 is the 30″ × 12″ box that goes over a fridge, 24″ deep instead of 12″. The suffixes are a small vocabulary of their own — DD forces double doors where one door would be standard, FD means a full-height door with no drawer over it, and -2 or -3 counts the drawers. The full chart lives on the sizes page; there is no reason to memorise it.

What matters here is not decoding all thirty codes on your sheet. It is finding the two or three that deserve a question. In order of how often they turn out to be wrong:

  • Any corner codeAnything starting BBC, WBC, BER, WER or WDC is a corner cabinet, and corner cabinets do not occupy the wall you think. A blind corner written BBC36-42 is a 36″ box that consumes 42″ of wall once it is pulled clear of the corner so both sets of doors can open and the filler beside it is counted. Plan with the second number, never the first — read the wrong end of that pair and every number to its right is six inches out.Ask this“How much wall does this corner cabinet actually occupy, and how much of its door is blocked by the run coming the other way?”
  • Any suffix on a cabinet you reach into dailyFD versus plain, -2 versus -3: those letters decide whether the thing under your hands a hundred times a day is a door with a shelf behind it or a stack of drawers. Designers default to doors because they are the cheaper box, and customers assume drawers because that is what the showroom had.Ask this“Which of these bases are drawers?” Then count them against the pans, the plates and the cutlery you actually own.
  • Anything with SB in itA sink base is not a base with a hole in it. SB36 draws a false drawer front — a panel with no handle and no drawer behind it — and carries no shelf, because the trap and the waste need that space.Ask this“Is the sink base wide enough for the sink we actually chose?” The rule of thumb is 3″ wider than the sink’s outside dimension, and the sink guide has the real version of that sum.

One more habit worth building. Read the code list as a shopping list, not as a drawing — a column in which every line names one box somebody has to build. If a line on the drawing has no code beside it, it is not a cabinet — it is a filler, a panel, an appliance or a gap, and every one of those is a thing somebody has to remember to make.

03 The symbols

Seven marks on the sheet, and the part each one stands for

Cabinet drawings are dense with small conventions that nobody explains. Each of these seven is standing in for a real part — a board, a panel, a recess, a swing — and every one of them is something a drawing can quietly leave out.

Take the fillers seriously: they are the thing most often missing from a drawing that otherwise looks finished. A cabinet is built square to a thousandth; the wall it goes against is not straight, not plumb and not square to its neighbour. A filler is how a square object meets a crooked room: a plain board, supplied oversize and cut down on site. Base fillers come 3″ and 6″ wide, wall fillers likewise, and a tall filler runs the full 96″. If your drawing shows a run of cabinets meeting a wall at each end with nothing between the box and the drywall, either somebody has measured the wall to a sixteenth and got lucky, or the installer is going to be improvising on the day with your kitchen.

Fillers do a second job people forget: they buy clearance for a door or a drawer beside a wall or a tall cabinet. Put a base cabinet hard into an inside corner and the handle hits the return wall before the door is halfway open; put a drawer next to a fridge and the drawer front fouls the fridge door’s hinge as it swings. That is what the two or three inches beside them are for. The corner is a whole subject of its own and it is on the layout mistakes list for a reason.

Finished ends change arithmetic, not just appearance. Every exposed cabinet side needs a panel in the door finish, and that panel is ¾″ thick. Two finished ends on one run take an inch and a half of wall that the cabinet list does not mention. Read every end of every run and decide, out loud, which are finished: the end of a peninsula, the side of a tall cabinet beside a walkway, the side of the run that faces the dining room. The ones that will be hidden by an appliance or buried in a corner do not need one — though a panel nobody will ever see is the lesser of the two mistakes.

What the planner draws, and what it leaves to you

Appliances in our planner are generic geometry at catalogue sizes: a fridge bay at 36″ wide, a dishwasher at 24″, a range at 30″. That is honest space planning, and it is deliberately not a specification — there are no brands and no model numbers, so if you want the model on the drawing, put it there yourself with Add Note before you send it out.

Every clearance in this guide is yours to measure, and the planner hands you the instruments rather than the verdict. The 📏 Measure tool reads the distance between two points you click. The GAP number shown between two cabinets on the plan is clickable: select the cabinet you want to move, click the GAP, type the width you want, and that cabinet slides until the gap is exactly that. Both are manual, both answer only the question you thought to ask, and neither has an opinion about whether 30″ of aisle is enough. That judgement stays with you.

04 The stack

The vertical stack, which is the whole reason the elevation exists

Heights in a kitchen are not independent choices. They are a stack, and once you can recite it you can read any elevation in the trade in under a minute.

From the floor: a base cabinet is 34½″ tall, which includes a 4½″ toe kick recessed under it. A countertop adds 1½″ and lands you at the North American standard of 36″. Standard wall cabinets hang with their bottoms at 54″ from the floor, which leaves the familiar 18″ of backsplash between counter and cabinet. Wall cabinets are 12″ deep, and the main exception is the short box over a fridge at 24″ deep, hung at 72″.

Now the part that explains the whole industry. Full-height wall cabinets come 30″, 36″ and 42″ high — the short 12–24″ boxes exist for over a fridge or a hood. Add each of the three to the 54″ mount line and you get 84″, 90″ and 96″ — which are exactly the three heights tall cabinets are built in. The system is designed so the top of a pantry and the top of the wall cabinets land on one line. If the top of the run on your elevation does not form a single straight line, ask why before you ask anything else. Sometimes there is a good answer. Often it is a cabinet somebody swapped late.

Then look at the air above the run, because that is where late surprises live. On an 8 ft ceiling a 96″ run is already touching, so there is nowhere for a crown moulding to go; a 90″ run leaves six inches; 84″ leaves a foot, which most people fill with a moulding and a dust shelf or leave open and regret at cleaning time. Our own crown is 3½″ tall and the L-shaped top moulding 4″, which is the sort of number worth knowing before you approve a run whose gap to the ceiling is drawn as three inches. Crown also only comes in White Shaker and Grey Shaker, so a wood-grain or gloss run cannot be topped in its own finish — an honest limit, and better learned at drawing stage than at delivery.

The last vertical worth a hard look is the drawer stack. A three-drawer base does not divide into three equal fronts; the standard split is graduated — roughly 6″, 12″, 12″ from the top down, so the top drawer is for cutlery and the two below take pans. If the elevation shows three equal fronts, either you are getting something non-standard or the drawing is schematic. Both are worth a question, and only one of them is fixable for free.

05 The chain

The dimension chain, and the thirty-second check that catches most errors

Every properly drawn elevation carries its dimensions in strings, stacked. The top string is the overall: wall to wall, one number. Under it runs the chain: cabinet by cabinet, left to right, each part with its own number. Sometimes there is a third string for centre lines — the sink waste, the range, a window.

The check takes thirty seconds and finds more errors than anything else on this page. Add up the chain. Compare it with the overall. Then ask where the remainder went.

Do the sum on the drawing itself. A remainder is not a rounding error — it is a gap that will exist in your kitchen, at one end of the run or the other.

There are only three outcomes, and each has a follow-up question.

  • The parts equal the wall exactly — good, and now ask which end absorbs the error when the wall turns out not to be 144″. Somebody has to have been given that job.
  • The parts add to less than the wall — there is a gap. Make the maker name it: a second filler, a wider scribe, a deliberate reveal beside the fridge. A gap with a name is a design decision; an unnamed one turns up on install day as a strip of wall.
  • The parts add to more than the wall — something is getting cut. Fillers are meant to be cut and nobody minds; a cabinet that gets cut down is a different object with a different door, and it should not be discovered with a saw in hand.

Two more things to read off the chain while you are in there. Appliance openings are not appliance sizes. A 36″ fridge does not live in a 36″ hole — its own installation sheet states a required opening, which is a different number from the appliance’s own width, plus a door that needs room to swing past whatever is beside it. Take the number from that sheet and put it on the drawing before anything is cut. And dimensions run to the finished wall: if the walls at either end of the run are going to gain a quarter inch of tile or half an inch of new drywall after the cabinets are drawn, that comes off the run, and it is the kind of thing everybody assumes somebody else accounted for.

One honest note about scale. On any drawing, look for a stated scale — and then do not use it. Measuring off a printed sheet is how a quarter-inch error becomes structural: the print scales to whatever the printer decided, and PDFs get resized in transit. Read numbers, never distances. If a dimension you need is not written on the drawing, it is not on the drawing, and the right move is to ask for it rather than to reach for a ruler.

06 Your side

What the maker needs from you, so the first drawing is nearly right

A drawing is only as good as the numbers it was built from, and the round trip of revisions almost always traces back to something you were never asked for. Send these unprompted and you will usually get a first draft you can actually mark up.

  • Each wall measured at three heights — near the floor, at counter height and up where the wall cabinets go. Walls bow. The three numbers will differ, and the smallest is the one the cabinets have to fit into.
  • Ceiling height at both ends of every wall — one number in the middle of the room hides a floor that falls an inch across the kitchen, which is the difference between a tall cabinet standing up and a tall cabinet being scribed.
  • Windows and doors measured to the casing — not to the glass and not to the rough opening. The trim is what the counter, the run and the wall cabinets will actually hit. Sill height too, because it caps how tall anything under that window can be.
  • Every service, with a height and a distance along the wall — waste stub, hot and cold supplies, gas line, the hood connection, outlets, switches, and any HVAC register in the floor or the kick zone.
  • Appliance model numbers, not appliance sizes — “a 30″ range” is not a specification. The model number lets somebody look up the real opening, the real door swing and the real depth including the handle.
  • A note on what cannot move — a soil stack, a structural post, a window you are not replacing. Designers will happily work around a constraint they know about and will absolutely design straight through one they do not.
  • Photographs of each corner — cheap, instant, and they answer questions nobody knew to ask, like whether that bulkhead is 12″ or 18″ deep.

How to take those numbers properly — the three-height rule, the diagonal check for square, rounding down rather than up — is the whole of the measuring chapter, and it is worth the hour. The one habit to steal right now: write everything in inches, never in feet and inches, and never mix units on the same page. 146″ cannot be misread at nine in the evening the way 12′ 2″ can.

The strongest thing you can send is a drawing of your own. If you draw the room, place the cabinets you think you want and export the views, you convert a conversation full of adjectives into a sheet full of numbers, and the maker’s job becomes correcting you rather than guessing at you.

What the export actually gives you

Now the honest part, because it decides who you can send it to. It is an image-based PDF — each page is a picture of a canvas. There is no DWG or DXF, no title block, no revision line, no scale bar, and the text is not selectable. It is a superb way to say this is what I mean to a maker, an installer or a spouse. It is not a file a shop can machine from.

07 Sign-off

The list to run before you reply “approved”

Print the sheet, or open it on something bigger than a phone, and go through this with a pen. It takes about twenty minutes. Tick each line only when you have physically found it on the drawing — not when you are confident it must be right.

  • Wall lengths match your own measurements — every overall dimension against your notes, not against memory. A wall that differs by an inch from what you measured is the single highest-value catch on this list.
  • Every appliance carries a model number — and the opening drawn for it came from that model’s own sheet.
  • Hinge sides are marked, and each door opens away from you — walk the run in your head: standing at the sink, does the door beside it open into your shoulder?
  • A filler exists everywhere a run meets a wall or a tall cabinet — and beside every appliance whose door has to clear a neighbouring drawer front.
  • Which ends are finished is stated — and the ¾″ per panel has been counted into the run.
  • The countertop overhang is drawn — 1½″ past the cabinet face is standard, which puts a 24″ box under a top about 25½″ deep. It matters where the counter meets a doorway or a walkway.
  • The sink base is checked against the actual sink — against the spec sheet of the sink you are buying, not the generic one in the drawing, and with the tap and any filter counted into the space below.
  • The run is checked against the window — to the casing, with the sill height, and with the counter and any tall cabinet tested against both.
  • Outlets and switches are plotted against the backsplash — an outlet at the wrong height lands in the middle of a splash or behind a wall cabinet, and the wiring is easy to move now and awkward later.
  • Every chain adds up to its overall — wall by wall, with the remainder named.
  • The top of every run lines up — 84, 90 or 96″, and the gap to the ceiling is big enough for whatever is going into it.
  • Door style, colour and handle are named in writing — a drawing shows a shape, not a finish. The code beside it is what gets made.

Then do the one thing that catches what a checklist cannot: walk the drawing like a morning. Come in, put the shopping down, open the fridge, fill the kettle, unload the dishwasher, get a pan out for dinner. At every step, look at what your hands would meet on the sheet. A kitchen that fails that walk on paper fails it in person too, and the paper version is free to fix. The install chapter is the point at which it stops being free.

08 Revisions

Why a change after sign-off is a schedule event, not an edit

Here is the thing customers genuinely do not know, and no one tells them kindly. Before sign-off, a change is a drawing change: somebody moves a rectangle, the dimensions update, you get a new PDF. After sign-off, the drawing has become an instruction to a factory. Panels are cut in batches by material and colour, doors are ordered as a set, and your kitchen has taken a slot in a queue.

So “can we just make that one 30 instead of 33?” is not a small request. It re-opens the drawing, which re-opens the approval, which puts the order back into the queue behind everybody who did not change their mind. Nothing about that is punitive; it is simply how anything made to order works. The mistake is treating the revision as an edit and being astonished by the date.

Two questions to ask before you approve any change, including one you asked for yourself:

  • “What else does this change?”Cabinet widths are a chain. Narrow one box by 3″ and either every dimension to its right shifts, or a filler somewhere grows by three inches, or the run no longer reaches the wall. The answer should name the other things that moved, and you should see them on a re-issued drawing rather than take them on trust.Red flagA revision that comes back with only the one number changed, on an otherwise identical sheet, and the overall dimension untouched.
  • “What does this do to the date, and is anything already cut?”Ask plainly, and ask for the answer in writing. The useful version is a date, not a mood. If parts of the order are already made, you want to know now whether the change creates a leftover you are paying for.Also worth asking“Is there a point after which changes are no longer possible at all?” Every shop has one. Very few volunteer it.

Then handle the paperwork like a grown-up, because this is where disputes come from. Every re-issued drawing should carry a revision number and a date, and you should approve exactly one of them — the newest — in writing, naming that revision. Approving “the drawing” by text message when three versions exist is how two people end up each convinced they were looking at a different sheet. If a change was agreed on the phone, reply in writing with what you understood was agreed. That email costs you two minutes and settles every argument that follows.

09 Not a spec

What a cabinet drawing is not

Most of the trouble left in a kitchen project comes from a drawing being asked to do a job it was never drawn for. Four things it is not, and each one has somebody else whose job it actually is.

It is not a construction drawing. It shows cabinetry against a room that is assumed to already exist. There is no framing on it, no header over the opening you are thinking of widening, no blocking behind the wall for a tall cabinet, no structural note of any kind. If your project moves a wall, that is a separate drawing by somebody qualified to draw it, and the cabinet layout gets redrawn afterwards, not before.

It is not a plumbing or electrical layout. Where a waste stub or an outlet appears on an elevation, it is a record of where you said it was — useful, and not a design. It does not size a drain, set a fall, specify a circuit or place a receptacle. Nobody drawing cabinets is designing your services, and a symbol on a cabinet elevation has never once persuaded an inspector of anything.

It is not a guarantee that anything meets a code. This one matters enough to be blunt. Clearance above a range, receptacle spacing along a counter, GFCI protection, the circuits a kitchen has to have of its own, ventilation and make-up air: those are set by your local code and confirmed by your inspector. Published guidance exists for all of them and is worth reading, but guidance is not permission. Nothing in our planner validates a layout — it does not check a clearance, it does not check a work triangle, and it will happily draw a kitchen that no inspector would sign. That is between you, your installer and your inspector, and it always has been.

It is not a parts list either. The sheet you approve says what goes where. It does not say how each box is cut, what the panel sizes are, or how the sheets are nested — that is shop information, generated after the drawing is settled, and it is not what you are being asked to approve.

What the drawing is, when it is good, is the last cheap moment in the project. Everything on it can be changed with a keyboard. A fortnight later the same change needs a van, a factory slot and somebody’s apology. Twenty minutes with a pen is the best-paid twenty minutes in a kitchen renovation, and almost nobody spends it.

It also buys the clearance a door or a drawer needs beside a wall or a fridge. A drawing showing a run meeting walls at both ends with no filler anywhere is usually wrong, not lucky.

What does a finished end mean on a cabinet drawing?+

It means that cabinet side will be on show and gets a panel in the door finish, usually marked F.E. or drawn hatched. The panel is three quarters of an inch thick, so two finished ends take an inch and a half out of the run length. Check that the drawing has counted it, and check which ends are genuinely visible, because a panel nobody will ever see is money spent on nothing.

What measurements does a kitchen designer need from me?+

Each wall measured at three heights, near the floor, at counter height and up where the wall cabinets go, because walls bow and the smallest number is the one that governs. Ceiling height at both ends of every wall. Windows and doors measured to the casing, with sill heights. Every service with a height and a distance along the wall. And appliance model numbers rather than sizes.

What should I check before signing off a kitchen drawing?+

Wall lengths against your own measurements, a model number on every appliance, hinge sides marked, a filler wherever a run meets a wall, which ends are finished, the countertop overhang, the sink base against the sink you actually bought, the run against the window casing, and outlets against the backsplash. Then add up each dimension chain and make somebody name the remainder.

Can I change the drawing after I approve it?+

Usually yes, but treat it as a schedule event rather than an edit. After sign-off the drawing is an instruction to a factory, so a change re-opens the approval and puts the order back in the queue. Ask two questions before approving any change: what else does this change, and what does it do to the date. Then approve one numbered revision in writing.

Is a cabinet drawing the same as a construction drawing?+

No. It shows cabinetry against a room assumed to already exist, with no framing, no headers and no structural notes. It is not a plumbing or electrical layout either, and it is not a guarantee that anything meets a code. Clearances, receptacle spacing, ventilation and permits are between you, your installer and your inspector.
