Every article on this subject starts at prep, prime, paint. The step they all skip is the one that decides how it ends: finding out what the door is made of. Three of the commonest kitchen doors in Canadian houses will not hold paint at all, and no amount of prep changes that.
Somebody will tell you the kitchen is a long weekend and a good brush. The painting is not the hard part and never was. Line up ten sets of kitchen doors from ten houses built between 1985 and 2015 and three or four of them cannot be painted — not badly, not with an extra coat, not at all — because the surface you would be painting is a plastic skin that is itself only glued on, and paint cannot be stronger than what it lands on. Prep, prime, paint is the right sequence. It is just the second half of the job. The first half happens with one door off its hinges, held up to the window, being looked at.
What they search at midnight “how to paint kitchen cabinets without sanding” — usually typed with the doors already stacked in the garage and a tin of something bought that afternoon. The answer depends entirely on a question they have not asked yet.
Unscrew one door. The face lies to you — a printed woodgrain foil and a real maple veneer look identical at arm’s length under a ceiling light. The edge tells the truth, because the edge is where every construction has to finish, and every construction finishes differently.
Solid wood shows grain that runs continuously from the face around onto the edge, and end grain — a row of tiny open pores like the cut end of a bundle of straws — at the ends of the rails. On a five-piece door you can usually see a hairline where the centre panel sits in its groove, and in February that hairline is wider than it was in July, because the panel is floating and shrinking. That movement is a fact you will meet again in section 08.
Wood veneer stops at the edge. The face grain does not continue round; instead there is a separate strip of edge banding, sometimes matched well enough that you only see the seam at a corner in raking light. A tell-tale: hold two doors side by side. If the same knot and the same flame appear in the same place on both, you are looking at a rotary-cut veneer or a printed decor, not sawn timber.
Painted or primed MDF has an edge with no grain of any kind — dead uniform, slightly darker than the face, and if you rub it with 180 grit it raises a soft fuzz rather than a shaving. It is heavy. A 15″ × 30″ MDF door is noticeably heavier than the same door in poplar, which is why old MDF doors sag their hinges.
Thermofoil is a vinyl sheet vacuum-formed over a routed MDF blank. It is one continuous skin: it covers the face, follows every curve of the profile, wraps around all four edges and then stops on the back, in a visible line an inch or so in from the edge, usually against a plain white or beige melamine backer. Find that line and you have identified it with certainty. Press a fingernail at a top corner, the corner nearest a dishwasher or an oven: on an older kitchen you can often feel a slight ridge where the skin has begun to lift.
Melamine or HPL laminate is hard, uniform and cool to the touch, with a decor that repeats exactly from door to door, and a separate applied edge band whose sheen almost never matches the face perfectly. Look at a corner: the band has a bond line you can see, and on a twenty-year-old kitchen the band is often slightly proud or slightly open at one corner.
High-gloss PET or acrylic reads like glass. No orange peel, no brush texture, a reflection sharp enough to read a phone screen in. Occasionally the protective film is still on the inside face of a rarely-opened door, which settles the question on the spot.
Two confirming tests, both done where nobody looks — the inside bottom edge of a base door:

If you land on one of the last three rows, stop reading the painting articles. Sections 02 and 03 explain what you are actually up against, and section 09 covers the four cases where paint is the wrong tool entirely.
Thermofoil doors have been a staple of Canadian builder kitchens since the mid-1990s, and they are the single commonest reason a cabinet repaint fails spectacularly rather than gradually. The construction is simple: an MDF blank is routed with a profile, a sheet of PVC film a few tenths of a millimetre thick is laid over it, and a heated vacuum press pulls the film down into every detail while a hot-melt adhesive bonds it to the board. What you get is a seamless, washable, genuinely durable door — for a decade or fifteen years, and only away from heat.
Now paint it. The paint bonds to the vinyl perfectly well; vinyl is not a difficult surface for a decent bonding primer. The problem is one layer further down. You have added a film to the top of an assembly whose weakest joint is at the bottom, and nothing you did improved that joint. The adhesive softens with heat. Not oven heat — household heat. The plume of steam that rolls out of a dishwasher when somebody opens it mid-cycle does it. So does the side of a wall oven during a long roast, and the vent of a toaster oven left under a wall cabinet.
Which is why the failure always starts at an edge, and usually at the top corner nearest the heat. An edge is where the skin has the least mechanical grip — it is stretched thinnest over the radius, it has the shortest path for steam to reach the glue, and it is the one line of the adhesive that has an open end. Once a corner lifts, the failure is not a chip. It is a peel: the vinyl comes away in a sheet like a sticker, carrying your two coats of enamel with it, and the exposed MDF beneath is raw, fuzzy and stained with glue.
People read that and reach for the exception. Yes, a thermofoil door that never sees heat — the far end of a run, a pantry on an interior wall — can be painted and can look good for years. The trouble is that a kitchen is a set, not a collection. The four doors that fail are the four beside the dishwasher and the range, which is to say the four you look at most.
You will find primers rated to go straight over the foil — the makers list thermofoil among the substrates — and they adhere perfectly well. They simply leave the failing joint underneath untouched. There is one way to paint a thermofoil kitchen that addresses the actual problem, and it is not a shortcut: take the foil off. A heat gun on low, worked from a lifted corner, releases it and most of a door comes away in one piece in a few minutes. What you are left with is a routed MDF door with adhesive residue — scrape it, sand the profile back to clean fibre, seal the routed edges where the MDF is thirstiest, and then paint. From that point on you are painting MDF, which is the easiest substrate in this entire guide. Allow real time per door, and count the doors honestly before you start on the first one.
Open the door to the left of the dishwasher and look at the top inside corner in raking light. A milky bloom, a small bubble, or an edge you can catch a fingernail under means the adhesive has already released there. That door was going to fail whether you painted it or not — painting simply means you will blame the paint. The fix chapter covers what can be tightened, patched or replaced without redoing the kitchen.
A melamine face is a sheet of decor paper impregnated with melamine-formaldehyde resin and fused to the board under heat and pressure. The resin cross-links during pressing, which means the finished surface is a thermoset plastic: hard, chemically inert, and non-porous on purpose. That is the entire product proposition. It is a surface designed so that nothing you spill on it soaks in. Paint is a spill.
High-pressure laminate puts the same melamine chemistry on the face — a decor sheet and a clear overlay, both melamine-impregnated, over six or eight kraft layers bonded with phenolic resin and pressed above a thousand psi — and then glues the whole sheet to a substrate. For our purposes the surface behaves identically. So does the high-gloss PET film on a modern slab door, which is a polyester sheet pressed onto MDF with a clear top layer whose entire job is to be slick.
Three things get sold for this job. Two of them create adhesion; the third only cleans — and the third is the one people buy instead of the other two.
“No sanding required” is the most expensive sentence on the internet, and it is not quite a lie — it is a claim with its conditions deleted. It is true in one narrow case: a sound, matte, previously painted wood or MDF face, thoroughly degreased, under a genuine bonding primer. In that case the existing paint film is porous enough and the primer bites. On melamine, on PET, on foil, on anything waxed or polished with an aerosol for a decade, it is false, and it fails in a particular way — not in week one, when everything looks superb, but in month four, when a fingernail catching the edge of a door lifts a flap of paint the size of a stamp and it keeps coming.
Silicone deserves its own warning. Years of spray polish leave a silicone film that is invisible, survives a casual wipe, and causes fish-eye: the wet paint crawls away from each contaminated spot and dries with little craters in it. There is no fixing it once it is in the film. Degrease twice with a fresh rag each time, rinse with clean water, and change the water between the upper doors and the lower ones.
Before you commit twenty doors, run the test the trade runs. After the primer has cured — cured, not dried — score a small grid of blade lines about a millimetre apart on a hidden face, press packing tape down hard over the grid and rip it off fast. If squares come away with the tape, nothing you put on top will save it, and you have learned that for the cost of one hidden square inch instead of a kitchen.
Worth knowing what our own doors are made of before you assume they are the exception: a Flip Classic front is a 0.02 mm melamine face on an 18 mm particleboard core, and the high-gloss front in our Delight tier is a 0.45 mm PET sheet on an 18 mm MDF core. Both are precisely the substrates this section is warning you about. If you own them and you want a different colour, the answer is new fronts rather than a brush — see reface, re-door or start over.
This is the fork most articles skip, because both answers are unglamorous. Red oak — the default kitchen timber of a whole generation of Canadian houses — has large open vessels running the length of the grain. Paint does not fill them. Paint lines them, shrinking slightly as it cures and settling into every pore, so a painted oak door still reads as oak from three feet away in any raking light. In a white kitchen it is unmistakable.
Some people want that. A textured painted oak has a grain and a history and looks like something rather than nothing, and if that is the finish you are after, the job is straightforward and you can skip the rest of this section. Most people asking how to paint their oak cabinets are picturing a flat, modern, factory-looking face, and they are three steps away from it, not one.
Those steps are grain filler. It is a paste — water-based or oil-based — squeegeed hard across the grain with a plastic blade so it packs the pores, then scraped off the surface, left to cure, then sanded flat. The key word is across: working along the grain pulls the filler back out of the pores you just filled. One round takes most of the texture out. It will not take all of it, because water-based fillers shrink as the water leaves, so what looked flat on Tuesday shows a faint ripple on Wednesday. Two rounds per face is the honest number, on both sides of every door, plus every exposed frame face. In a twenty-door kitchen that arithmetic is what makes people reconsider.
Oak has a second trap, unrelated to texture. It is full of tannins, and tannins are water-soluble. A water-based primer over bare or freshly sanded oak will pull them to the surface as brown or amber streaks, worst at knots and end grain, and they come through the topcoat weeks later. The answer is a stain-blocking primer — shellac-based, or a dedicated stain-blocker — over the whole door, not just the spots that look suspicious. A plain acrylic primer will not hold them back, and touching up a bleed with more of the same paint simply feeds it.

The third answer, and the one a lot of people land on once they have done the arithmetic: leave the oak boxes where they are and change the fronts. Oak carcasses from that era are frequently plywood and frequently fine. It is the doors that dated, and doors are the replaceable part, and that comparison gets a page of its own straight after this one.
Take the argument out of the realm of skill for a moment. A factory-finished door and a site-repainted door differ in four ways that have nothing to do with how good you are with a brush.
None of that says do not do it. A careful person with a fine-finish sprayer, a dust-controlled space and patience closes most of the gap, and there are site-sprayed kitchens that are indistinguishable at normal viewing distance. The point is narrower: the comparison people actually make is between a brushed site repaint and a factory door, and those are different products with different lifespans, not one product available two ways.
A painted colour does not have to be a site job. Our Shaker fronts can be ordered in any of 104 paint colours, finished before they reach you, on three Shaker bases — White Shaker, Grey Shaker and Slim Shaker White — so a painted green or a painted charcoal arrives already finished rather than brushed on in your own kitchen. You pick it in the Colors tab of the Flip Board and see it on your layout in 3D, and the format painter repaints a single cabinet if you want one of them in a different colour.
Two honest limits. Flat slab doors cannot be custom painted — they come in the catalogue finishes only, and those catalogue finishes are laminate and PET, which is the whole point of section 03. And colour on screen is a calibrated approximation, not a sample match: for a final decision, get the physical swatch in your own kitchen light. The planner will not tell you what your existing doors are made of, and no drawing can predict adhesion. That is still a door, a blade and ten seconds at the window.

Assuming you have a paintable substrate — solid wood, veneer in good condition, or MDF — this is the sequence. Nothing in it is optional and nothing in it can be moved earlier.
One thing to plan for that nobody mentions: where twenty doors live for a month. They cannot be stacked face to face while curing, they cannot lean against a wall on a painted edge, and they have to be somewhere warm, dry and dust-free enough that nothing settles into the wet film. A spare room with a sheet down and a row of standoffs is the usual answer. A garage in a Canadian shoulder season is not.
Sheen is decided by the ratio of resin to pigment in the can. More resin relative to pigment gives a harder, less porous, more washable film that also reflects more light; more pigment gives a flatter, softer, more porous one. The look is a side effect of the mechanics, which is why sheen belongs on a page about what holds up rather than only on a page about colour.
A flat or matte kitchen cabinet is a cleaning problem. The surface is microscopically open, so grease settles into it rather than on it, and the only way to get grease out of an open film is to rub. Rubbing burnishes: it polishes the high points into a shiny patch that will not come out, so a matte kitchen acquires a permanent gloss halo exactly where hands land — around the pulls, along the top edge of the drawer front, on the door beside the bin. You cannot clean it back and you cannot touch it in, because a touch-up over a burnished patch shows as a dull island.
High gloss has the inverse problem, and it is a substrate problem rather than a maintenance one. A glossy film is a mirror, and a mirror shows you the shape of what is underneath it: every ripple in a thirty-year-old door, every brush mark, every filled-but-not-quite-flat pore, every low spot where filler shrank. A factory high-gloss front is flat as glass because it is a pressed sheet on a machine-flat blank, not paint laid over three decades of history. Painting an old door in gloss is asking a magnifying mirror to flatter it.

The practical rule: satin as the default, semi-gloss where the kitchen is hard-used, and match the sheen on the doors to the sheen on any painted frame or end panel — a satin door against an eggshell frame reads as a mistake even to people who could not name what is wrong. Sheen as an aesthetic decision — how much it shifts the colour itself, how it behaves under downlights, how readily it shows a fingerprint on a dark door — belongs with colour choice, and the colour guide takes it from there.
Repainted kitchens do not fail evenly. They fail in the same five places, in roughly the same order, in every kitchen. Knowing the order is useful twice: it tells you where to put the extra care while you are working, and it tells you what a failure already in progress is trying to say about what went wrong.
Read the failures backwards and they diagnose the job. Chips beginning at edges and at the handle mean grease or missing key — a prep failure. A door stuck at the latch corner means the film went back into service soft — a patience failure. A hairline along a rail joint on an otherwise perfect kitchen is not a failure at all; it is wood being wood.
Paint is a surface treatment. It changes what a kitchen looks like and nothing else, and there are four conditions where that is the wrong tool by a wide margin.
And one more, which is less a disqualifier than a reality check: if you are hoping paint will convert a partial-overlay kitchen into a full-overlay one, it cannot. The reveal between the doors is set by the door sizes and the hinges, so an old kitchen with an inch of face frame showing between every pair of doors will look exactly like an old kitchen, in a new colour. Reveal is a door decision.
Where each of those leads next: a sound box with a tired front is the classic case for new doors on existing cabinets, and a box with structural problems is the case for replacing it — the reface-or-replace page walks through which is which. If the doors are fine and the trouble is hardware, sagging, sticking or a drawer that no longer runs, the fix chapter is the quicker first stop.
Only on one kind of door. If the face is a sound, matte, previously painted wood or MDF surface, a genuine bonding primer can key into it after a thorough degrease. On melamine, on high-gloss PET and on thermofoil, skipping the scuff leaves the primer nothing mechanical to hold, because it is sitting on a thermoset plastic engineered to shed exactly this. Sanding cuts scratches the primer bites into; deglossing is a chemical clean that removes oil and dulls the sheen but creates no tooth. They are different jobs and one does not replace the other.
You can paint the vinyl, and the vinyl takes paint well. The problem is one layer down. The foil is a skin bonded to an MDF blank with a hot-melt adhesive that softens with heat, so the door beside the dishwasher or the wall oven eventually peels the whole assembly away in a sheet, taking your paint with it, and it starts at an edge. The only honest way to get a painted finish there is to strip the foil off with a heat gun and paint the MDF underneath, or to change the doors.
Degrease twice with a fresh rag each time, scuff the whole face until the sheen is uniformly dead flat, vacuum and tack off every trace of dust, then use a bonding primer made for slick surfaces. Let the primer cure rather than just dry, and test it before you open the colour: score a small grid with a blade in a hidden spot, press packing tape hard over it, and rip it off. If squares come away, nothing on top will save it. Then two thin coats of a cabinet enamel and a cure measured in weeks.
Almost always one of three things, and none of them is the paint. Grease left on the door before sanding, which the abrasive then drove into the scratches. No mechanical key, because the substrate was laminate or foil and nothing scuffed it. Or the film was still soft when the doors went back on and got closed against the frame, which is called blocking. Chips starting at the edges and around the handle point at the first two. A door stuck shut at the top inside corner points at the third.
Take one door off and look at its edge, because that is where every construction gives itself away. Solid wood shows grain running from the face round onto the edge, and end grain at the ends of the rails. A veneer or laminate face stops at the edge and meets a separate applied band, usually with a visible seam or a slightly different sheen. Thermofoil is one continuous skin that wraps around and terminates in a line on the back face. Painted MDF has an edge with no grain at all, which sands to a soft fuzz rather than a shaving.
A site repaint and a factory finish are not the same product. A factory door is sprayed flat, on all six faces, usually before the cabinet is assembled, in a coating that cures chemically rather than only drying, so the film is as thick in the corners of a Shaker profile as it is on the flat. A brushed door carries extra paint wherever the bristles compressed, which is the inside corners, and that is where it cracks first. A careful spray job at home closes much of the gap. A brush and a roller does not.
Dry to the touch in an hour or two is not cured, and the recoat window is not the cure either: depending on the enamel it runs from about four hours to a full sixteen, so read the tin rather than the internet. A waterborne cabinet enamel is not fit for abrasion for the first five to seven days, and the makers that publish a figure allow up to thirty days to reach optimum hardness and final sheen. Rehang the doors once they can be handled safely, but fit fresh bumpers so painted faces never land flat against each other, do not stack anything against a painted surface, and do not scrub anything for a month.
Only if you want a flat face. Red oak has large open pores and paint lines them rather than filling them, so painted oak still reads as oak from three feet away in any raking light. Grain filler is a paste squeegeed across the grain, scraped, cured and sanded flat, and one round rarely finishes the job because water-based filler shrinks as it dries. Two rounds per face, both sides of every door, is the honest number. The other honest answer is to leave the texture and paint an oak kitchen on purpose.
Satin as the default, semi-gloss on doors that take a beating. Sheen is a durability setting before it is a look, because the more resin there is relative to pigment, the harder and more washable the film. A flat cabinet is a cleaning problem: the surface is microscopically open, grease settles into it, and wiping burnishes a permanent shiny halo where hands land. High gloss is the opposite problem, turning every ripple, brush mark and filled pore in an old door into a highlight.
One door off, one look at the edge. Then, if the answer is new fronts rather than a repaint, draw the run at real cabinet widths and put a painted Shaker colour on it in 3D.
