Whether your room can have one is arithmetic, not taste. Counter, aisle, island, aisle, counter — add it up honestly, and the room answers before you draw a cabinet.
Almost every island that fails, fails at the same moment: somebody drops the dishwasher door open while somebody else is trying to reach the fridge, and the kitchen turns into a corridor with a barrier across it. The island is rarely the problem. The floor around it is — and that floor was never measured, because it was never drawn. So: arithmetic first, cabinetry second.
An island is not furniture you add to a finished kitchen. It is what fits in the floor left over once both walls have their cabinets, measured finished face to finished face. A base cabinet is 24″ deep and a countertop finishes about 25″ from the wall, so two walls of cabinets spend 50″ before anything stands in the middle. The narrowest island worth building is a single row of 24″ bases with an aisle each side: 25 + 36 + 24 + 36 + 25 = 146″, a hair over 12 ft.
That is where the “you need a 12-foot room” rule comes from: addition, not taste. Widen the working aisle to 42″ and you need 158″, about 13 ft 2″. Add stools, which take the island to roughly 39″ deep, and you want 14 ft.
What they measure first “minimum kitchen size for an island” — usually typed standing in the room with a tape in hand. Right instinct: it is a width question before it is a design question.
One exception rescues a lot of rooms: if one long side carries no base cabinets, you get that 25″ back, and a galley with an island opposite works at about 10 ft 7″.

Check the other axis too. Leave 36″ between the end of the island and a wall or tall run if you mean to walk round it. If you cannot, do not leave 20″ — that is not a route, it is where the mop ends up.
These get quoted so often they have stopped meaning anything, so here they are with reasons attached. Every one is measured finished face to finished face, not carcass to carcass: a 1½″ overhang each side takes 3″ out of the aisle, and a chunky bar pull takes another 2″.

Now the case that quietly decides everything: the dishwasher door. Dropped fully open it projects about 24″ into the room. In a 36″ aisle that leaves roughly a foot — not enough to pass, and not enough to stand square and load, so you work sideways from the end of the door with a plate at arm’s length. At 42″ you can stand at it; at 48″ somebody can get behind you.
Oven doors behave the same way at 22–24″, and a fridge door has to swing well past 90° before its own drawers clear the seal. So in practice: whichever aisle faces the dishwasher gets 42–48″. And remember the island has drawers of its own opening into that aisle. The related mistakes are here.
The common drafting error is to draw the island as a shape sized to look right, then work out what goes in it later. Work the other way round: the island is the cabinets.
Depth. One row of standard bases is 24″, finishing near 26″ once the top overhangs front and back. Two rows back to back gives 48″ plus panels, and that is the practical ceiling: you reach 24 to 25″ across a counter, so past 48″ the middle is a strip you can only reach by climbing on it. Add seating instead and the far side becomes knee space — 24″ of cabinet plus 12 to 15″ of overhang lands at 39 to 42″ overall.
Length is set by what it holds, not by the floor available. Frameless bases come in fixed widths, so an island is an addition sum — two 36″ drawer banks and a 24″, plus end panels. Under about 4 ft it stops being a work surface; under 3 ft it is a table with drawers, and a table you can move is more useful. The standard sizes are here: every inch you invent is an inch somebody has to make.
Seating gets added last, on paper, by drawing three circles along an edge. Circles do not have knees. Four numbers make it real.
About 24″ of counter edge per stool, or 30″ if you want elbows at dinner rather than a perch. A 72″ edge seats three properly; it does not seat four. Two stools meeting at a corner fight for the same knee space, so keep the nearest one 24″ clear of it.
Overhang: 12″ is a perch, 15″ is a meal, measured from cabinet face to counter edge. The taller the surface the less knee depth you need — 12″ is fine at a 42″ bar, mean at a 36″ counter. Do the vertical sum too: the underside of a 36″ top with 1½″ stone sits near 34½″, so a 24–26″ stool leaves nine or ten inches of thigh clearance — and anything screwed underneath eats it.
36″ of clear floor behind the stools to get on and off, 44″ if anyone must pass somebody already sitting.
And the structural one. Unsupported stone past roughly 10 to 12″ wants help, sooner in 2 cm than 3 cm. Corbels are cheap, visible, and occupy precisely the volume knees want; a steel flat bar let into the cabinet tops is invisible and carries the whole edge; a support panel works only at an end.

A fabricator templates on top of what is already built: if the steel is not let into the cabinets on template day, it is not going in later without lifting the finished top off. Settle the overhang, the support and the stool height while the cabinets are still boxes — and ask the fabricator for their number on your exact material. It is their warranty.
One decision, two legitimate answers, and a great deal of confident nonsense written about both.
Best when the island is a work surface first and a table second
One continuous plane at the height of your other counters: pastry rolls across it, shopping lands on it, the whole thing becomes a buffet when you host. It is also one template, one run of polished edge, one uninterrupted slab. The price is honesty — if the sink is in the island, your guests are looking at the washing up.
Best when the kitchen lives inside a living room
A raised section screens the working surface and puts drinks at standing height. What it costs is depth: the knee wall or brackets behind it add roughly 4 to 6″, so a 42″ bar on a 24″ cabinet run is really a 30″ island in plan, and that comes out of the aisle. It is also two templates and a return face at every end, which is always the more expensive top.
The two-level bar went out of fashion when open plan came in, and plenty of designers will tell you never to build one. That is a style position dressed as a rule: if you cook facing the room, build it flat; if the island is the boundary between a kitchen and a sitting room, the bar solves a real problem.
Walls carry services; the middle of a floor does not. Put a sink or a hob in an island and the job stops being cabinetry and starts being trades.
Water. A waste has to run from mid-room to the stack under the floor, falling roughly ¼″ per foot the whole way. Over a joisted floor with a basement below that is a morning and a couple of holes; over a slab it is a saw, a chase and a repair. Every trap also needs air or it siphons and you smell the drain — mid-room that usually means an air admittance valve where your code permits one. That is a plumber’s call, not ours. Air. A cooktop in an island has two ventilation routes and no third. A ceiling hood needs a duct through the ceiling, and joists run whichever way they run — check before promising a hood exactly there. With no walls to contain the plume it wants to be wider than the cooktop, roughly 3″ past each side, at the maker’s height. A downdraft pulls sideways across a rising plume, a fight with physics: fair with a low pan, poor with a tall stock pot, and it eats most of the cabinet below. Reversing the hood means a ceiling repair; reversing the downdraft means a floor.
Landing space is not optional. Beside a sink, 24″ one side and 18″ the other; beside a hob, 15″ and 12″ minimum. An island has no backsplash, so what misses lands on the floor — or on whoever is opposite. A hob with stools directly across is a burn risk; the common arrangement is sink in the island, cooking on the wall.
Power. An island worktop needs receptacles, and the rules on where they may sit have moved in recent code cycles — ask your electrician which edition is in force. Either way the cable comes up through the floor inside the island footprint, which sets the deadline.
This is what our planner is for: draw the real room, drop in real catalogue cabinets at real sizes, and walk the aisles in 3D with the island in place before anybody cuts a floor. One side works. The other is looked at. Design them separately, because they want opposite things.
The working side gets drawers, not doors. You approach an island from the side, and a hinged door opens into the aisle, then asks you to crouch and reach past its own hinge into a dark box. Deep drawers give you pans, bowls and everyday plates in one pull. If the sink is in the island, put the bin pull-out immediately beside it: that is the most repeated journey in any kitchen.
The seating side gets a finished panel. An unfinished carcass side is visible from every angle and reads instantly as a mistake. Shallow storage there instead — cookbooks, baskets — looks lovely and is not free: 12″ of shelving plus 15″ of overhang on a 24″ cabinet run takes the island past 48″ deep, and every inch comes out of an aisle you already fought for.
Waterfall ends turn the top down the side to the floor, and they ask three things of the job: a mitred joint at 45°, so no cut edge shows and the stone appears to fold; grain that continues round the corner, which means the leg is cut from the piece next to it in the slab and turned like a book; and a fabricator who has done one before, because a mitre that opens up shows a dark line forever.
Two consequences people miss: the toe kick stops at that end, so the flooring must run under the waterfall or be cut to it. And the overhang goes with it, so you lose a seat there.
A peninsula is an island with one end attached to something. One aisle instead of two hands back roughly three feet of room width — exactly the difference between a room that can take an island and one that cannot — and you keep the seated overhang.
The costs are real: a blind inside corner where it meets the run, which needs planning, not hoping — the corner has its own chapter — and a dead end you back out of rather than a loop you walk round. Neither outweighs a 36″ aisle you resent forever.
Then prove it at full size before you order anything. Nothing on a screen is as convincing as tape on your own floor.
Do the same in 3D and you get what tape cannot: a raised bar against your sightline, the island depth against the fridge door.

Yes, but both are expensive to reverse. A sink needs a waste run under the floor falling about a quarter of an inch per foot, plus venting. A cooktop needs a ceiling hood ducted through the joists, or a downdraft.
