Kitchen Lighting, Layer by Layer

One bright fitting in the middle of the ceiling puts you in your own shadow at every counter you use. Everything here is a way of getting light onto the work surface instead of onto the top of your head.

Stand at your counter tonight, ceiling light on, and look down at the chopping board. There is a shadow across it, and the shadow is you. Your back is to the only light in the room and your shoulders are between the bulb and the knife. Turn the tap on and it happens again, worse, because you lean forward over the bowl. None of that is fixed by a brighter bulb — a brighter bulb behind you casts a harder, blacker shadow in front of you. It is fixed by putting light where the work is.

00 The problem

You are standing in your own light

A kitchen is a room where you look down at a horizontal surface 36″ off the floor, usually with a wall in front of your face and a cabinet over your head. That geometry is hostile to a central ceiling fitting. Every position you actually work in — chopping counter, sink, range — puts your body between the source and the task, and the wall cabinet above cuts off whatever was arriving at a useful angle.

So the room measures bright and feels dim, and people respond by adding output. It does not help, because the problem is direction, not quantity. You need light arriving from in front of you and from low down — from under the wall cabinets, from over the island, and from a downlight set far enough out into the room that its beam reaches the front edge of the counter instead of the doors above it.

Everything below is one of those three, plus the business of making them agree, plus the decisions that have to happen while the cabinets are still a drawing.

01 Three layers

Ambient, task, accent — and the order to settle them

Three layers, three different jobs. They are not interchangeable, and a kitchen with only one of them has a problem, whichever one it has.

  • Ambient — so the room is not a caveThe general fill: recessed downlights, a flush ceiling fitting, light bounced off a ceiling. Its job is to keep shadows from going black. It is the layer people over-invest in, because it is the one you notice missing at the door and never notice failing at the counter.
  • Task — so you can see what you are cuttingLight on the working plane, arriving from in front: under-cabinet strips, a downlight aimed at the sink, pendants over an island. This is what makes a kitchen feel good to use, and the hardest layer to add later, because most of it is attached to the cabinets.
  • Accent — so the room reads at nightGlass-door cabinets lit from inside, a strip over open shelving, a toe kick line. It contributes almost nothing to seeing. It decides how the kitchen looks at ten in the evening with everything else dimmed to a quarter.

Settle them in that order. Task first, because it is bound to the cabinets and to the wire routes inside them. Ambient second, filling the walkways and whatever the task layer misses. Accent last, and be willing to delete it. A kitchen with a good task layer and a plain ceiling fitting is pleasant to cook in; a kitchen with beautiful accent lighting and nothing under the wall cabinets photographs well and is miserable at seven on a weekday.

02 Under cabinet

The one light that changes the room, and the inch that ruins it

Under-cabinet light is the highest-return thing you can do to a kitchen, and it is routinely installed an inch or two out of position, which throws most of the benefit away. The bottom of a wall cabinet sits about 18″ above the counter and is 12″ to 13″ deep. Where along that 12″ the fitting goes decides whether you light your hands or your backsplash.

Frameless cabinets deserve a warning here. A face-framed box has a lip along the bottom that hides a fitting by accident. A frameless bottom is flush with the doors, so anything screwed to it is on show. That is not an argument against frameless — it is an argument for deciding on a light rail or a routed channel before the boxes are built. Both are cabinet decisions.

The default for any run longer than one cabinet

Pucks throw overlapping circles: scalloped pools on a matt counter, and worse on gloss — a row of reflected dots at eye level, the commonest complaint about a kitchen lit at the last minute. A bare tape is no better; an unshielded line of diodes reflects as a dotted line. The fix for both is a diffuser, and the neatest is a frosted lens in an aluminium channel, which also acts as a heatsink. LEDs do not wear out from use. They die of heat, and a strip stuck onto a melamine cabinet bottom has nowhere to send it.

Run the tape the full width of each cabinet, not the middle two-thirds. Light stops where the tape stops, and finishing 3″ short at each end leaves a dark seam over every cabinet joint — where two doors meet, and where you tend to stand. Tape around 200 to 400 lumens per foot suits most kitchens, on a dimmer regardless: full output off a pale quartz top at 18″ is uncomfortable.

03 Colour

2700K, 3000K, 4000K — and the rule that beats all three

Colour temperature is the number people argue about and the least important decision here, provided you make it once and apply it everywhere. Lower numbers are warmer and more orange, higher numbers cooler and bluer — the opposite of the everyday sense of those words, which trips up everybody once.

The rule that matters more than the number: every layer in the room must be the same temperature. A ceiling at 3000K over a strip at 4000K does not read as two considered choices. It reads as broken — half the room faintly yellow, half faintly blue, with a visible line where they meet on the counter. Take the whole kitchen warm, or take the whole kitchen cool. Do not split it by layer.

Two practical notes. Buy each layer in one order: “warm white” tape from two batches can be visibly different end to end, and the only fix afterwards is replacing the run. And ask for CRI above 90 anywhere you judge food. Colour rendering is a separate specification from temperature, and a low-CRI light at a perfect 3000K still turns raw meat grey and a red pepper brown.

04 Inside & under

Glass doors, shelf light and the toe kick

Lighting a glass-door cabinet is two different jobs. Lighting the glass means one small fitting at the top inside so the panel glows from the room — a night-time effect, and it works with reeded, seeded or frosted glass, which forgives whatever is behind it. Lighting the shelves means making the contents visible top to bottom, and that needs a strip under the front edge of each shelf, or vertical strips in the back corners washing across every level. One light at the top of a cabinet with wooden shelves lights the top shelf brilliantly and leaves the bottom dark — what nearly everyone gets and nobody asked for. Glass shelves solve most of it by letting light fall through.

Behind clear glass you also see what you were not thinking about: the connector, the driver lead, the raw edge of the back panel, the screws. Plan a finished interior and run the wire in a back corner, where the shelf pins will not fight it. Be honest about the purpose too — interior cabinet light almost never helps you find anything. It is staging, which is a legitimate thing to want but should not be paid for out of the task layer.

Toe-kick lighting has one job it does well. A dim, warm line at floor level is an excellent night route: across the kitchen at two in the morning, or a glass of water for a child, without a ceiling light that wakes the house. On its own low dimmer or a motion sensor it is one of the nicest things in a kitchen.

  • It is not task light — nothing at ankle height reaches a counter 36″ up. As your only addition it solves nothing.
  • Grazing light exaggerates — every dip in the levelling compound, every ripple in vinyl and every crumb becomes a long shadow.
  • Gloss floors mirror it — polished tile turns one strip into two.
  • Recess it, do not stick it on — up inside the toe kick behind a slot, out of the mop’s way.
  • Assume water — the toe kick is the wettest 4″ of the room. Use a damp-rated strip and keep connections off the floor.
05 Pendants

How high, how many, how far apart

Pendants over an island are decoration that happens to make light. Reverse that and you will be disappointed — two shaded fittings rarely light a whole island, and you will still want a downlight at each end for prep. What they must do is sit at a height that lights the surface without cutting the room in half.

  • Height is measured to the counter, never the ceilingHang so the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36″ above the countertop. 06 Downlights

Off the wall, and not on a grid

Recessed downlights usually get set out as an even grid on a ceiling plan, which looks tidy on paper and lights the wrong things. The most useful number in this section: keep the row roughly 24 to 30″ out from the face of the wall.

A wall cabinet is 12 to 13″ deep with a door on it, and a base counter runs about 25½″ deep including the overhang. A downlight 12 to 18″ off the wall sends its beam straight down the cabinet doors and drops the counter beneath into shade — the same shadow, in a more expensive fitting. At 24 to 30″ the beam clears the cabinet and lands on the front half of the counter and on your hands. On a run with no wall cabinets above, come in to about 20 to 24″.

Then think in work surfaces rather than a lattice. One over the sink, centred on the sink and not on the window behind it — those two lines are rarely the same, and the sink wins. One where you always chop, one at each end of a long run, and only then fill the walking areas. Spacing fixtures about half the ceiling height apart, roughly 4 ft on an 8 ft ceiling, covers the leftovers — but that is a fallback, not a plan.

  • Choose a wide beam for general light — 40° to 60° fills; 24° to 36° makes pools with dark ground between them, an accent effect.
  • Never centre one on the front edge of a wall cabinet — it scallops the doors and advertises any misalignment in the run.
  • Fewer, better fittings beat a dozen small ones — a ceiling perforated with tiny apertures reads like a retail unit.
  • Airtight, IC-rated under an insulated ceiling — anything else leaks warm, wet air into the roof space, and in a cold climate that ends in condensation.
  • Accept that joists win — when the ideal position is not available, the under-cabinet layer has to carry the room. Another reason to settle that layer first.
07 Wiring & dimming

Switches, dimmers, and where the driver lives

The parts nobody photographs are the parts that generate the complaints.

Switching. Give the under-cabinet layer its own switch and put it where you work, not only at the door — you will use it more than any other control in the kitchen, often as the only light on. Switch the ambient layer from both entrances if there are two. Group by layer rather than by wall: a switch for “the left half of the kitchen” is useless, one for “all the counters” gets used daily. And check switch positions against the cabinet elevation — a switch behind a tall pantry is a switch that no longer exists.

Dimming. Two things have to be true: the driver must be a dimmable one, and it must match the dimmer type — trailing edge and leading edge are not interchangeable, and low-voltage LED gear generally wants the former. A mismatch does not fail cleanly. It flickers, buzzes audibly in a quiet room, dies at the bottom of the dial, or refuses to strike from a low setting. Minimum load bites too: one short strip on a dimmer built for filament lamps may not start at all. Buy the dimmer and the driver as a matched pair and test one section before committing to twelve.

Where the driver lives. Every low-voltage layer needs a transformer, and it is the component most likely to fail before anything else in the kitchen. It needs air, and it needs reaching by somebody with a screwdriver who is not going to dismantle a cabinet run. Good homes: a wall cabinet at the end of the run behind a removable panel, an adjacent pantry, above the wall cabinets with access from the front. Bad homes: sealed in a bulkhead, behind a fixed panel, or in the toe-kick void — dark, wet, unreachable. Drivers hum as they age, so avoid a shared bedroom wall. And a long tape fed from one end goes visibly dimmer at the far end: feed both ends, or split the run.

Honest limit

Anything on the mains side of this — new circuits, switch drops, recessed fittings in a ceiling — is licensed work in most of Canada, with a permit and an inspection. That is not caution for its own sake; it is the part of a kitchen that burns houses down. Plug-in low-voltage under-cabinet kits are the genuine DIY path: they land on an existing outlet and nothing behind the wall changes. Chapter 04 covers what is sensibly self-installed.

Which leaves the list this page has been circling — the decisions that must be made before the cabinet order goes in, because they are built into the boxes rather than attached to them.

  • Light rail or routed channel — on every wall cabinet that will carry a strip. Neither retrofits neatly.
  • Wire routes through the backs and sides — where the cable passes from box to box, and where it lands relative to the three horizontal mounting rails in the back panel.
  • Which cabinet is the driver cabinet — nominate one, keep it reachable, and do not fill it with a fixed shelf across the space the transformer needs.
  • The interior of any glass-door cabinet — a lit interior shows the back panel, the shelf edges and every wire you did not plan.
  • Switch and outlet positions against the elevation — an outlet at the wrong height fights the under-cabinet channel.
  • The toe-kick slot — if the night route is happening, settle the recess now rather than chiselling it later.

What colour temperature should kitchen lights be?+

3000K is the usual kitchen compromise: warm but clean. 2700K reads warm and domestic and suits a kitchen open to a living room; 4000K reads clinical but shows a chopping board honestly. Should under-cabinet lights go at the front or the back?+

The front. Mount within the front third of the cabinet bottom, roughly 2″ back from the front edge, so the light lands on the front half of the counter where your hands are. A strip at the back washes the backsplash and leaves the work in the shadow your own body casts.

Strip lights or puck lights under kitchen cabinets?+

Continuous tape in a channel for any run crossing more than one cabinet, and always over gloss. Pucks throw overlapping circles — scalloped pools on the counter and a row of reflected dots in a shiny surface. Pucks are fine over a single short cabinet with matt surfaces below, or as a plug-in retrofit.

Do under-cabinet LED strips need a diffuser?+

Yes, in almost every case. A bare line of diodes reflects as a dotted line in a gloss backsplash or a polished quartz top, at eye level. A frosted lens in an aluminium channel fixes it, and the aluminium doubles as a heatsink — LEDs fail from heat, not from hours.

How high should pendants hang over a kitchen island?+

So the bottom of the shade sits 30 to 36″ above the countertop — roughly 66 to 72″ off the floor over a standard counter. Then check the sightline: sit on a stool and make sure you can still see the face of someone standing opposite. If you can see the bare lamp from that stool, the fitting needs a diffuser or a deeper shade.

How many pendants over an island, and how far apart?+

Space them against the island, not the ceiling. Centre the group on the island’s own centre line, keep the outermost fitting at least 6″ in from the end, and allow roughly 24 to 30″ between centres so the pools overlap. Three small pendants suit an island of about 7 ft or more, two larger ones a shorter island, and one linear fitting suits anything.

How far from the wall should recessed lights be?+

Roughly 24 to 30″ out from the face of the wall. Closer and the beam runs down the wall cabinet doors, leaving the counter in shade. With no wall cabinets above, come in to about 20 to 24″. Set them out against work surfaces first — sink, chopping area, ends of long runs — then fill the walkways.

Is toe-kick lighting worth it?+

For one purpose. A dim warm line at floor level is an excellent night route through the kitchen without waking the house. It is not task light and does nothing for a counter 36″ above it. Grazing light also exaggerates every dip in the floor, and gloss tile mirrors the strip. Recess it behind a slot, use a damp-rated strip, and give it its own low dimmer or a sensor.

Why do my LED lights flicker or buzz when dimmed?+

Almost always a mismatch between driver and dimmer. The driver has to be a dimmable type and has to suit the dimmer technology — trailing edge and leading edge are not interchangeable. Minimum load is the other cause: a short run of tape on a dimmer built for filament lamps may not start at all. Buy them as a matched pair and test one section first.
