Cabinets to the Ceiling, or the Gap Above

One question with three completely different answers — a taller door, a stacked second box, or a build-down and crown. What actually decides it is a number nobody has measured: how far out of level your ceiling is.

Somebody in your house has already had this argument. One side wants the cabinets to run all the way up and finish the wall properly; the other side has stood in a kitchen where they did exactly that and the ceiling made a mockery of it — a wedge of shadow above the fridge, three-eighths of an inch wide at one end and gone by the other. Both of them are right, and neither of them is arguing about the thing that decides it. There are three different ways to build a kitchen that reaches the ceiling, they have almost nothing in common, and which one you can get away with depends on a measurement nobody in the house has taken.

00 The real question

It is not one decision. It is three builds that photograph the same

“Cabinets to the ceiling” describes a result, not a method. Three quite separate builds produce it, and in a finished photograph you cannot tell them apart:

  • One taller door — a 42″ wall cabinet hung on the normal line, finishing at 96″. Full-height leaves, no horizontal joint anywhere.
  • A stack — an ordinary cabinet with a short second box on top of it, each with its own doors, and a seam where they meet.
  • A build-down — standard 30″ or 36″ cabinets, and the space above them filled with framing and drywall built down from the ceiling, with crown covering the joint.

They are not variations on a theme. They have different doors, different hinge counts, different trim, different install sequences and completely different failure modes. One of them cannot be corrected after delivery. One of them is a week of drywall before a cabinet goes on the wall. Choosing between them at the showroom, on looks, is how people end up with the fourth outcome — the one nobody chooses, where 30″ cabinets went up under a 96″ ceiling and there is now a foot of dead wall collecting something that is not quite dust.

01 Three builds

What each one actually is, and how each one fails

Build 01

One taller door — 42″ uppers

Best on a flat 8′ ceiling, and the cleanest line a kitchen can have

A 42″ wall cabinet is the same 12″-deep box as every other upper, hung from the same line, just taller. With the underside at 54″ it finishes at 96″ — an eight-foot ceiling, exactly. Full-height leaves, bottom of the run to ceiling, and no horizontal joint anywhere on the wall. That is the whole appeal, and it is a real one: a kitchen with no seam above the counter reads as joinery rather than as a row of boxes.

The door is the build. A 42″ leaf is a long piece of laminated panel and it gets three hinges instead of two, because that much weight on two cups is how a door starts to drop at the outer bottom corner. Everything that makes a door move — a warm cabinet interior on one face, kitchen steam on the other — gets amplified by length. What the door is made of matters more here than anywhere else in the kitchen; the materials chapter covers what moves and what does not.

Crown attachment: there is none, and that is the point. If the cabinet finishes at 96″ under a 96″ ceiling there is nowhere to put a moulding.

Failure mode: the ceiling. This build has no tolerance in it at all. The cabinets are set dead level because they must be, so any deviation in the ceiling turns into a tapering line of daylight along the top of the run, with no trim available to close it. If you pick this build you are betting on a measurement — see section 04 before you place the order.

Build 02

A stack — a short second box on top

Best at 9′ and above, and the only way to get taller without a taller door

A 36″ or 42″ cabinet with a second, short cabinet sitting on it: 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24″ high, the same 12″ depth, its own doors. Those short heights are in the catalogue as bridging boxes — the cabinet that goes over a fridge, over a hood, over a doorway — and a stack is the same box doing a second job. Which is why the widths are the thing to check: they are stocked at the over-appliance sizes, 36″ down to 24″ and 21″ only in the 12″-high band, so the narrow 9, 12, 15 and 18″ uppers a run often ends with have nothing to sit on top of them. Check the widths before you plan a whole wall of stacked boxes.

The seam is the design decision. Put the short box on a 42″ cabinet and the joint lands at 96″; on a 36″ cabinet it lands at 90″. Either way it is a hard horizontal line running the length of the wall, at or just above standing eye level from across the room, and dead in the sightline of anyone sitting at an island. Line it up with something — the top of a tall pantry, the head of a doorway, the top of a window casing — and it reads as intentional. Line it up with nothing and it reads as a row of boxes with another row of boxes on it.

Doors double, and the hinge count goes from three on the tall leaf to five across the bay. Every short box brings its own leaves, its own hinges and its own set of adjustments, and all of them have to agree with the row underneath before the wall reads straight. Alignment is the entire job on a stack: the two rows must be flush front to back within about a sixteenth, or the shadow at the seam changes width along the wall and advertises it.

Build 03

Standard uppers plus a build-down and crown

Best when the ceiling is bad, or when the height you need is not a cabinet height

Ordinary 30″ or 36″ cabinets on the 54″ line, and the space above them filled by a framed, boarded and painted box built down from the ceiling. Call it a build-down, a bulkhead or a drop — it is the same thing a 1985 soffit was, built deliberately this time and to the right depth. The cabinets butt into a flat surface you made, and a crown moulding covers the joint between the two.

The doors are the least demanding of the three builds: 30″ or 36″ leaves, two hinges each, nothing unusual. The work moves off the cabinet order and into carpentry — frame, board, tape, three coats of compound, sand, prime, paint — all of which has to happen before a single cabinet is lifted.

This is the build where crown does structural work. It bridges the cabinet face and the bulkhead face, so a joint that opens and closes by three-sixteenths along the run disappears under it. Nothing else in cabinetry absorbs error that cheaply.

Failure mode: the bottom edge of the build-down. It has to be dead level and dead straight, because the cabinets go tight to it and a level run under a bowed bulkhead is the same tapering gap you were trying to avoid, only now you built it yourself. Snap a line, shim the framing to the line, and check it with a laser before the board goes on — not after.

This is the one build the planner will draw for you. Add Bulkhead in the 3D toolbar drops a build-down onto a wall at whatever height you set, and the cabinets and mouldings on that wall then stop at its underside instead of at the ceiling — which is the whole point of building one.

Which one your kitchen wants is mostly decided for you by two numbers. The first is the ceiling height, and it eliminates builds outright. The second is the ceiling’s deviation, and it is the one that catches people.

02 The arithmetic

Why an eight-foot ceiling is a 42-inch answer

An eight-foot ceiling is 96″, and a standard kitchen is built out of numbers that add up to 96 exactly. Once, deliberately, from the floor:

34½″ of base cabinet, plus a 1½″ countertop, makes a work surface at 36″. Leave 18″ of backsplash above it for a kettle, a food processor and your forearms, and the underside of the wall cabinets lands at 54″. Add a 42″ wall cabinet and the top of the kitchen is at 96″. Not approximately. Exactly.

That is not a coincidence anybody stumbled into. The 42″ wall cabinet exists because of that sum, and it is the reason the question “should cabinets go to the ceiling” has a clean answer in a standard room and a messy one everywhere else.

One number in that chain gets quoted two ways, which is worth pinning down before it confuses you on somebody else’s drawing. The gap above the counter is 18″ measured from the finished worktop and 19½″ measured from the top of the 34½″ cabinet box. Same wall, same 54″ line, same kitchen — the only difference is whether the 1½″ of stone is counted in. This page measures from the worktop throughout, because that is the surface you stand a kettle on.

Same wall, same 54″ line, three upper heights. The cabinets below never move. The only thing that changes is how much wall is left at the top, and what you are going to do about it.

Work the other two heights and the leftover strip appears: a 30″ upper tops out at 84″, leaving 12″ of bare wall; a 36″ tops out at 90″, leaving 6″. Those two numbers are the whole subject of this page. The full ladder of cabinet heights and widths lives in the sizes reference; what matters here is what the leftover can become:

  • Nothing at all — the default, and the reason people search for this at midnight. A ledge you cannot see onto, in the greasiest air in the house.
  • A flat band — a flush board across the top of the run, closing the strip in one plane. In our own range those come as 3″ and 6″ flat top boards, so a 6″ leftover closes with exactly one of them.
  • A crown moulding — our crown profile stands 3½″ tall, so it covers a 3½″ strip on its own and, more usefully, covers a strip that is not the same height all the way along.
  • A build-down — framing and drywall bringing the ceiling down to meet the cabinets. The only option that removes the strip rather than covering it.
  • Another cabinet — 12″ of leftover above a 30″ upper is exactly a 12″ wall cabinet. It works, and it puts a seam at 84″, which is lower and more noticeable than the seams in section 03.
  • Light — paint the strip and wash it from above, and it stops being a gap and becomes a cove. More on that in section 05.

One last thing about the sum: the 18″ backsplash is where the slack lives. Some kitchens run 15″ and some 20″. Every inch you drop the wall cabinets is an inch added to the leftover at the top and an inch of counter you can no longer get a stand mixer under. But if there is a range on that wall the gap above it is not yours to adjust freely: the published guidance is 30″ from the cooking surface to the underside of an unprotected cabinet, and 24″ only where that underside is properly shielded or where a listed microwave-hood is installed to its own instructions. Settle that clearance first, confirm it with your own inspector, and let the cabinet above it be whatever is left.

03 Nine and ten feet

Above 96″ the doors stop getting taller, and that is deliberate

Past an eight-foot ceiling the question stops being “which build” and becomes “what goes in the extra foot”. The catalogue answers it for you, by omission: our wall cabinets stop at 42″ high, and where a line goes further it adds 48″ and stops there. Nobody makes a 54″ or a 66″ upper door, and the reasons are physical rather than commercial.

  • Weight, hanging off three small cupsA 42″ leaf on a 21″-wide opening is already a two-hand door to lift into place. The entire load hangs from hinge cups bored into the door’s own panel, and the leverage on the top cup grows with every inch of height below it.What that looks likeThe outer bottom corner drops, the gap along the bottom rail goes from parallel to wedge-shaped, and you spend an evening with a screwdriver getting most of it back.

  • The hinge schedule runs outA 42″ door is already a three-hinge door — two cups will not hold that much laminated panel without the outer bottom corner dropping. Keep going up and the count keeps climbing: a full-height tall-cabinet leaf runs to five hinges and more, and every extra cup is one more adjustment point that has to agree with all the others before the door hangs straight.
  • The reach nobody usesThe top of a hypothetical 54″ door would sit at 108″. You would be buying a door, a hinge and a finish in order to open a space you cannot see into without a ladder.The honest versionStorage above about 96″ is an archive. So above 96″ you stack. And because the short wall-cabinet heights step in 3″ increments, the arithmetic lands dead on most ceilings:

Anything that does not land on a 3″ step — a 9′1″ ceiling, an old house at 104″ — goes to a build-down, because framing can be any height and a cabinet cannot.

Where a glass top box earns its place. A solid door at 96″ is a blank panel above eye level doing nothing but matching. Glass in the same position is the one part of a kitchen that works at night: it is the only box in the room whose contents never move, so it stays styled, and lit from inside it reads across a dark room when everything else is off. Two honest conditions. First, put nothing in it that you use, or the styling lasts a fortnight. Second, a lit glass box shows the back panel, the shelf edges, the connector and the driver lead — plan the interior and the wire route with the rest of the lighting, which the lighting guide works through layer by layer.

Worth knowing before you draw it: our glass fronts are White Shaker Glass, Grey Shaker Glass and a black-aluminium framed door. The two shaker-glass fronts include a 12″-high band, which is exactly the top box on a nine-foot ceiling — though the 12″-high cabinet itself is stocked at 21, 24, 27, 30, 33 and 36″ wide and nothing narrower, so check the width you need before you plan a wall of it. The black-aluminium door starts at 30″ tall, so on a 9′0″ ceiling the 12″ box is a shaker-glass one or it is solid.

04 The level problem

Your ceiling is not level, and nobody has measured it

Here is the sentence the rest of this page hangs off. A ceiling that falls ⅜″ across 12 feet is unremarkable in a real house — about three times the ⅛″-in-10-feet flatness a drywall spec asks for, and nobody measures it — joists that took up a crown, a strapping run laid on an old surface, a skim coat that went thin at one end, forty years of settlement. Nobody has ever noticed it, because there has never been anything straight up there to compare it to.

Then you install twelve feet of wall cabinet. It goes up dead level, because it has to: the doors have to hang square, the tops have to line through, the run has to relate to a counter that is itself level. And in doing that you have just hung a twelve-foot straightedge under the one surface in the room that was never straight.

What you get is not a gap. It is a wedge — far more visible than a parallel gap of the same average size, because the eye is excellent at spotting two lines that are not parallel and hopeless at judging absolute distances. And the top edge of a cabinet run is already a shadow line, so what you have made is a shadow that changes width as it travels. Three things absorb it, in increasing order of forgiveness.

Crown is the only one that forgives a wavy ceiling, and the reason is geometric rather than aesthetic. A crown moulding meets the ceiling on a thin sprung edge at an angle, not on a flat face, so a length of it will flex into a gentle wave as you nail it and still sit tight the whole way. The last sixteenth goes under caulk and vanishes. That is the honest reason crown has survived three centuries of changing taste: it is a tolerance absorber that happens to be decorative. A flat board cannot do it, because a flat board is flat — it sits in one plane and reports every deviation as a line that changes width.

So measure the ceiling before you choose the build, and it takes five minutes. Set a laser line right round the room at about 90″, then measure down from the ceiling to the line every two feet along each cabinet wall and write the numbers on the wall in pencil. No laser: a long straight edge, a good spirit level and a tape will get you there with more walking. The biggest number minus the smallest is the number that chooses your build.

  • Under about ⅛″ across the run — go hard to the ceiling. A 42″ upper, no trim, and it will look like joinery.
  • ⅛″ to ⅜″ — crown, or a scribed strip if the deviation is a clean slope rather than a wave.
  • Over ⅜″, or wavy rather than sloped — build down, and stop fighting it. You cannot scribe your way out of a ripple.
  • Different on different walls — entirely normal, and it is allowed to change the build on one wall. A crown that runs round a corner has to be continuous; a build-down does not.
  • Measure after the old kitchen comes out — the ceiling behind a soffit has never been finished and is usually worse than the part you can see.
Where the planner helps — and where it stops

On walls you draw yourself, ceiling height is set per wall in our planner, which matters in the rooms that need it most — a kitchen under a bulkhead, or one that opens into a taller space. (In the preset room shapes there is one ceiling height for the whole room.) Set the height, then open the elevation view and look at the run drawn against it: the leftover strip is not merely drawn to scale, it is dimensioned. The elevation writes the gap between the top of the run and the ceiling as its own number, so a 6″ leftover reads “6″” on the drawing before anything is ordered. On a drawn layout the Molding tab also has a one-click Auto add Top Molding, which puts your chosen top product — the 3″ or 6″ flat board, the crown, or the two stacked — on every wall-cabinet run at once, so you can see the closed gap in plan and elevation before you commit to it.

Be equally clear about what it is not doing. It draws the ceiling where you told it the ceiling is, as a level line. It does not measure your room, it does not check anything, and it will never tell you that your ceiling drops three-eighths of an inch at the fridge end. That number comes off a laser and a tape, and it is the number this whole page turns on.

05 The gap

What lives up there, what it is for, and three honest ways to close it

Start with what the gap collects, because people consistently underestimate it. The top of a wall cabinet is the stillest horizontal surface in the room, it sits in the warmest air in the room, and it never gets cleaned. A kitchen spends its life full of airborne cooking oil; the oil rises with that warm air and settles up there, the warmth slowly cures what has settled, dust bonds into the film, and after two years what is on that ledge is not dust. It is a soft amber lacquer that does not wipe. It has to be dissolved with a degreaser and scraped, on a ladder, over your head, with your face directly beneath whatever comes loose. Nobody does this twice.

And the gap is for nothing. It is not ventilation — a hood ducts through a closed void or a wall, never into an open strip. It is not access to anything. It is not a design feature in any kitchen where somebody did not draw it deliberately. It is simply what is left when 84 or 90 does not equal 96.

Which leaves the baskets. Putting a row of woven baskets or trailing greenery up there is the internet’s standard answer and it works exactly once, on the day you do it. Everything up there gets the same film, nothing up there ever gets taken down and washed, and you have converted an empty ledge you could ignore into a full one you cannot. The one version that survives contact with a real kitchen is a deliberate cornice: one repeated object, the same size, the full length of the run, treated as architecture rather than as styling — and even then you are signing up to take the lot down twice a year.

So, three honest ways to close it.

  • Build down and crown it — the permanent answerFrame, board, tape, sand, prime, paint, then run crown into the joint between the new face and the cabinets. The gap does not get hidden; it stops existing. It absorbs a bad ceiling as a side effect, and it is the only one of the three that ends up looking like the room was always that way.The tradeIt is a trades job that has to finish before the cabinets go on the wall, which makes it a sequencing decision rather than a decorating one.
  • A flat top board — quick, and only on a good ceilingA flush band in the door material, running the length of the run and closing the strip in one plane. Ours come as 3″ and 6″ boards and are supplied in 8′ sticks, so a 12′ wall needs a joint — put it over a cabinet joint, never mid-span, and the eye will forgive it.The catchA flat board is flat. It will report every bit of ceiling deviation as a line that changes width along the top — which is the problem you started with, relocated by three inches. Good ceiling only.
  • Leave it, paint it, light itPaint the strip the same colour as the ceiling, not the wall and not the cabinets. The ceiling then visually comes down to meet the cabinet tops and the gap stops being a shape. Then put a warm strip on top of the run aimed up, and the leftover becomes a cove — the one treatment that makes a gap look chosen.The catchYou have just lit the greasy ledge. Commit to cleaning the cabinet tops, keep everything off them, and check the fitting is invisible from the doorway. Uplight from a cabinet top is an accent layer, and it should be on its own switch.

A note on the paint question, because it only makes sense as a set of three. The wall colour makes the strip read as wall — fine where the cabinets are obviously furniture, awful in a fitted kitchen. The cabinet colour makes the run look taller but puts a visible joint where the paint meets the cabinet top. The ceiling colour is the one that works almost everywhere, because the ceiling is already a plane your eye has agreed to stop looking at. Paint it before the cabinets go up, too: nobody has ever cut a clean line against a cabinet top with the cabinet already on the wall.

06 Soffits

What is inside the box before you take a saw to it

If your kitchen already has a boxed-in strip above the cabinets, that is a soffit — standard practice for decades, and near the top of every renovation demolition list. It may be nothing. It may be the reason the range hood works. You do not get to guess.

What is actually found inside one, roughly in order of frequency:

  • Nothing at all. Three sticks of framing and a sheet of drywall, built out to meet 30″ cabinets and hide the gap this page is about. This is the common case, and it is why people are confident about knocking them out.
  • The hood duct. A 6″ or 8″ round, or the flat 3¼ × 10 rectangular duct that fits between studs, running from over the range to an outside wall or up through the ceiling. The most common real content, and the one that most often survives the demolition in a different form.
  • Wiring. The feed for the under-cabinet circuit, junction boxes for the ceiling lights, sometimes an entire run crossing the room because a soffit was the easiest path available on the day.
  • Plumbing. A vent stack from a bathroom above, or supply lines routed around a beam. Vents in particular cannot simply be moved sideways; they have a required rise.
  • Structure. Occasionally the soffit is boxing in the underside of a beam, or the bulkhead a wall above is bearing on. Rare — and the one that turns a weekend into a drawing, an engineer and a permit.

How to find out, cheaply. First, look at the building rather than the soffit: is there a bathroom directly above that wall, is there a hood cap on the roof or the outside wall, does a light switch or an outlet sit just below it. Then cut a 6″ inspection hole at one end, low on the face, and put a phone torch and a phone camera through it — the camera sees round corners your eye cannot. Then do exactly the same at the other end, because a duct crossing one end of a soffit tells you nothing at all about the far end. Two holes, ten minutes, patched with a drywall scrap and a scoop of compound.

What removing a soffit commits you to, in the order the bills arrive: the ceiling behind it was never finished, so you get an unpainted band of rough board or a ragged tape line the full length of the wall, and the wall behind it is the same. You will patch, and because a ceiling patch never matches, you will repaint the whole ceiling. Then the cabinet order changes — taller boxes, different doors, possibly a different hinge count. And the newly exposed ceiling arrives with a deviation nobody has ever measured, which sends you back to section 04 with less time than you had.

The option nobody offers: rebuild it instead of removing it. If a duct genuinely crosses that wall, a soffit can usually be rebuilt far tighter than the original — about 12¾″ deep instead of 14 or 16, which is a 12″ wall cabinet plus the thickness of its door, so the new face lands flush with the door fronts rather than standing proud of them. That single change is the difference between a build-down that reads as architecture and a soffit that reads as 1985. Flush with the door faces, painted the ceiling colour, with crown into the joint, and no visitor will ever identify it as a compromise.

Honest limit

Opening a soffit up to look is DIY. Moving what you find in it is not. A duct has to keep its cross-sectional area and its route to the outside, or the hood stops working while continuing to make noise; electrical alterations in most of Canada need a permit and an inspection. Find out what is in there before you price the cabinets, then get a number from the relevant trade before you commit to the build — because “we will just take the soffit out” is the sentence that most often turns a cabinet project into a construction project. It belongs on the list of things noticed too late.

07 Access

The shelf you will visit twice a year, and where the stool lives

Storage that reaches the ceiling is storage, and the arithmetic on how much of it you can actually use is unkind. A 42″ upper runs from 54″ to 96″ and carries three shelves where a 30″ cabinet carries two, so the floor of the top shelf sits at roughly 85″ off the ground.

Standing, most adults can lift something down safely and see what they are lifting up to about 72″. Between 72 and 85 you are reaching above your shoulder with your eyes below the shelf, which is fine for a light plastic box and not fine for a casserole dish. Above 85 you are patting the shelf blind. So the honest statement about a 42″ upper is this: you gain a full shelf per cabinet, and it is a step-stool shelf for everyone in the house, including the tall one. The second box of a stack, starting at 96″, is a stool every single time without exception.

That is not an argument against it. It is an argument about what goes up there.

  • Yes — the roasting tin that only comes out for a turkey, the preserving pan, the Christmas platter, the second set of glasses, the cake stand, the picnic basket, the vases. Things you use twice a year and would otherwise keep in a basement.
  • No — anything used weekly. A shelf you need a stool for will quietly stop being used, and then you have paid for storage twice.
  • Never — anything heavy. A stand mixer above shoulder height is how people get hurt in kitchens, and a cast-iron pot coming down off an 85″ shelf has your face directly under it.
  • Not — anything you would take down one-handed while holding something else. That is the whole category of accidents.
  • Light and boxed — the trick that makes high storage work is uniform lidded boxes with the contents written on the front edge, so you can read the shelf from the floor instead of climbing to remember.

And the stool has to live somewhere. A folding step stool is two or three inches thick and it needs a designed slot: the side of a tall pantry, the gap between a fridge and a wall, a bracket on the inside of a broom cupboard door, a 9″ cupboard at the end of a run. If you do not give it an address in the drawing, it will spend the next decade leaning against the end of the island. Draw it now; it is the smallest item on the plan and the one most likely to be forgotten.

This is also the strongest argument for build 03. A build-down gives you the clean ceiling line and the absence of a dust ledge, and it takes away nothing you were realistically going to use. If your kitchen already has a pantry and a basement, the extra shelf at 85″ is a nice idea you will visit less than you think. If it is a small kitchen with no pantry, that shelf is the difference between the seasonal things living in the kitchen and living two floors away, and it is worth the stool.

08 Crown & trim

What crown actually fastens to on a frameless box

A crown moulding has to be nailed to something, and a frameless cabinet does not obviously offer anything to nail to. This surprises people halfway through an installation.

A face-framed cabinet carries a hardwood frame across the front of the box, and the top rail of that frame is solid wood about ¾″ thick and 1½″ wide — you nail crown straight into it and it holds forever. A frameless box has no frame. What presents itself at the top front is the ¾″ edge of the top panel, faced in melamine or veneer. You can certainly drive a brad into that edge. It will hold for about as long as it takes the moulding to move once with the seasons, and then there will be a hairline gap you cannot close.

So the run gets a nailer: a continuous strip — a 1×2, or a rip of the same board — glued and screwed along the top of the cabinet faces before any moulding is cut. Continuous matters as much as solid. The nailer ties the whole run together and gives the crown one straight line to follow across joints where two cabinet tops are a thirty-second of an inch apart. The finishing chapter has the nailing and caulking sequence; what belongs here is what the nailer decides.

It decides the projection. Our crown profile stands 3½″ high and throws close to 4″ forward of where it is fastened. Set the nailer flush with the door faces and that moulding will stand nearly four inches into the room at 96″. Usually that is exactly the point. Occasionally it is a problem: at the end of a run beside a fridge, over a window casing on a return wall, or anywhere a door swings near the top of a tall cabinet. Draw the projection in plan, not just in elevation.

Outside corners are the ones that show. Crown is sprung — it sits at an angle, touching the nailer at the bottom and the ceiling at the top — so its mitre is not a flat 45. Either cut it nested, upside down and backwards against the saw fence with the fence standing in for the ceiling, or lay it flat and set the compound angles from the moulding’s own spring. Whichever you use, cut the outside corners first, from the same stick where you can. An outside mitre shows both faces at once, at eye level, usually with light raking across it, and any error is doubled.

Two more things nobody mentions until they happen. An open end needs a return — a short mitred piece turning the profile back onto the cabinet end or the end panel, because a crown that simply stops shows raw end grain above head height. It is a two-inch offcut and it is the difference between finished and abandoned. And mouldings come in 8′ sticks, so a longer run needs a joint: scarf it with two opposing bevels that overlap, never butt it square, and put the joint over a cabinet joint rather than mid-span. Buy a stick more than the take-off says; the first two corners are tuition.

The finish restriction in that last column is worth reading twice, because it can change your build. The profiled mouldings — the L-shape, the crown, and the shaker light rail that goes under the cabinets — are made in White Shaker and Grey Shaker only. If your doors are a wood-grain or a high-gloss laminate, there is no matching profiled crown to be had; with those finishes the flat 3″ and 6″ boards are what carries your door colour up to the ceiling. That is not a small footnote if you were counting on crown to absorb a ceiling problem — on a gloss or wood-grain kitchen with a bad ceiling, the answer moves to a build-down.

09 The order

Nine decisions, in the order they have to happen

Everything above collapses into a sequence, and the sequence is the useful part. Most of the pain in this subject comes from doing step three before step one.

  • Measure the ceiling before you draw anything — laser line at 90″, measure down every two feet along each cabinet wall, largest minus smallest. That single number chooses the build.
  • Open the soffit, if there is one — two 6″ holes, both ends, phone torch. Do this before you price cabinets, not after you have fallen for a drawing.
  • Fix the counter height and the backsplash gap — 36″ and 18″ unless you have a specific reason, because every number above them is built on those two.
  • Settle the clearance over the range first — then let whatever cabinet fits above it be the one you order. That gap is not a design variable.
  • Choose the build — hard to the ceiling under ⅛″ of deviation, crown or a scribed strip up to ⅜″, a build-down beyond that or wherever the ceiling waves rather than slopes.
  • If stacking, decide the seam height before the boxes — the seam is set by the lower cabinet, so choosing 36 or 42 below is choosing a line you will look at every day.
  • Check the trim exists in your door finish — profiled crown is a shaker-finish product. Find out before the build depends on it.
  • Draw the crown projection in plan — four inches at 96″, against the fridge, the window casing on the return, and anything that swings.
  • Give the step stool an address, and paint the strip early — both of these are free on a drawing and permanently annoying afterwards.

The honest summary is that the ceiling is the one thing in this room you did not choose and cannot change, and all three builds are ways of paying for that. The 42″ run pays with risk: it is the best-looking answer and it needs the best ceiling. The stack pays with a seam and a stool. The build-down pays with a week of trades and a finished line that sits below the real ceiling, and it is the only one that cannot go wrong after delivery. Pick the one your measurement allows, not the one the photograph shows.

Straight answers

Should kitchen cabinets go all the way to the ceiling?+

If the ceiling is good, yes — you gain a shelf in every cabinet, you lose the grease-and-dust ledge, and the room reads taller. But “to the ceiling” is three different builds: a 42″ upper under a 96″ ceiling, a short second box stacked on top for anything higher, or standard cabinets with a framed build-down and crown. Measure how far out of level your ceiling is before you choose, because that is what decides which of the three you can get away with.

What do I do with the gap above my kitchen cabinets?+

Three honest answers. Build down from the ceiling in framing and drywall and run crown into the joint, which removes the gap permanently and forgives a bad ceiling. Close it with a flat top board in the door finish, which is quick and only works on a straight ceiling. Or paint the strip the ceiling colour, leave it, and put a warm strip light on top of the cabinets so it reads as a cove. What does not work is baskets: airborne cooking grease bonds dust to everything up there, and after two years it has to be scraped rather than wiped.

Are 42 inch upper cabinets worth it?+

Under a 96″ ceiling they give you the cleanest line available and a third shelf in every cabinet, where a 30″ upper carries two. The trade-offs are real. The top shelf sits around 85″ off the floor, so it is a step-stool shelf for everybody; the doors are long enough to need three hinges each; and the run has no trim on it to hide a ceiling that is not level. Put things you use twice a year up there, and nothing else.

Stacked upper cabinets or one taller door?+

Under a 96″ ceiling, one 42″ door — there is nothing to gain from a seam. Above that, stacking is the only option, because our wall cabinets stop at 42″ high — and nobody makes an upper door past 48″ — for good reasons: a taller door weighs more, needs more hinges, warps more over its length and opens onto a shelf nobody can reach. A short box of 12, 15, 18, 21 or 24″ on top of a 42″ cabinet lands at 108, 111, 114, 117 or 120″ exactly.

What size upper cabinets for a 9 foot ceiling?+

A nine-foot ceiling is 108″. With the counter at 36″ and 18″ of backsplash, the wall cabinets start at 54″, so a 42″ upper finishes at 96″ and leaves exactly 12″ — which is a 12″ wall cabinet stacked on top, landing dead on the ceiling. The alternatives are a 12″ build-down in framing and drywall, or 42″ uppers with the last foot left open, painted the ceiling colour and lit. The short cabinet heights step in 3″ increments, so the same trick covers 9′3″, 9′6″ and 10′ ceilings.

Can I remove the soffit above my kitchen cabinets?+

Often yes, and often it turns out to be empty framing and drywall. Find out before you price anything: cut a 6″ inspection hole at each end, low on the face, and look in with a phone torch and a phone camera. You are looking for the range hood duct, wiring on its way somewhere, a vent stack from a bathroom above, or the underside of a beam. Removing it also commits you to patching the never-finished ceiling and wall behind it, repainting the whole ceiling, and ordering taller cabinets.

What if my ceiling is not level?+

Assume it is not. A fall of ⅜″ across twelve feet is ordinary, and nobody notices it until a run of cabinets, set dead level, hangs a twelve-foot straightedge underneath it — then the gap tapers and reads as crooked cabinets. Under about ⅛″ across the run, go hard to the ceiling. Up to ⅜″, a scribed strip on top or a crown moulding will take it. More than that, or a ceiling that waves rather than slopes, and you build down to a flat surface you make yourself.

Does crown moulding have to match the cabinet doors?+

It should read as one thing, which usually means matching — but check what is actually made before you plan around it. Our own profiled top mouldings and the shaker light rail come in White Shaker and Grey Shaker only, so a wood-grain or high-gloss door cannot have a matching profiled crown. With those finishes the flat 3″ and 6″ top boards are what carries the door colour. If you were counting on crown to absorb a ceiling problem, settle this first.

Can I put storage on top of my kitchen cabinets?+

You can, and it will look good for a season. The top of a wall cabinet is the stillest surface in the room and it sits in the warmest air, so airborne cooking oil settles there and slowly cures, and everything on it collects a film that dust bonds into; after a couple of years it is a soft lacquer that has to be dissolved and scraped from a ladder. If you are going to do it, do it as a deliberate cornice — one repeated object, the same size, the full length of the run — and accept taking them all down twice a year. Anything else up there becomes storage you never open and always clean.
