How to measure a kitchen for cabinets: which units to use, out-of-square walls, where to measure from, and what to record before you design anything.

For an undermount sink, keep the sink’s outside width about 3″ under the cabinet’s inside width so there is room for the mounting clips and a support rail; a 36″ base comfortably takes a 30–33″ sink.

Base and tall codes carry only the width, because height and depth are standard — B18 is an 18″ base. Wall codes carry width then height — W3030 is 30″ wide by 30″ high. Anything non-standard gets spelled out on the end.

Measuring short — the wall is actually wider than you wrote — is survivable: a slightly wider filler absorbs it and nobody will ever see it. Measuring long is the expensive one: the run does not fit, and you are either pulling a cabinet out of the plan or re-ordering. That asymmetry is the entire reason for the round-down rule and for keeping a filler at each end of every run. Caught before ordering, re-measure. Caught after delivery, change the plan before you cut anything — swapping a 24″ cabinet for an 18″ plus filler is a two-minute redraw in the planner.

The first set tells you what fits and lets you plan; the second is the truth, because the old cabinets were hiding bulges, patched drywall and out-of-plumb corners. Order from numbers taken off a bare wall wherever the schedule allows it.

A ceiling that drops an inch across a room will not stop 42″ uppers going in, but it will leave a wedge of daylight above them — which is exactly what crown moulding or a scribed filler strip is for. Before you swing a hammer, know what is inside: soffits routinely hide ducts, plumbing stacks and wiring, and finding out mid-demolition changes the project.

A sill lower than about 36″ means no standard base run under it, and a faucet in front of a window needs room to swing up — measure the tap you intend to buy, not a generic one.

Heaters need air: boxing one into a base cabinet is both ineffective and a real risk, so the usual answers are to leave that stretch open, relocate it with a licensed trade, or fit a toe-kick heater that lives inside the 4½″ kick space.

Measuring from a low spot flatters the room by an inch and is how a 96″ tall cabinet ends up not clearing the ceiling. Find the high point first, then measure up from there in several places.

Note how far the casing stands proud of the wall too, since a base cabinet cannot sit tight against a projecting trim and a door needs somewhere to swing.
